Bad examples of domain selection: shop360, thugian360 & yeah1
Category: How IT world operates Add commentsshop360.vn, thugian360.com, yeah1.com are apologies to domain selection.
Why? Many Vietnamese computers have UniKey installed to type Vietnamese with accents. If the users prefer VNI method, when they type the domains in the address bar:
- shop360 becomes shôp
- thugian360 becomes thugiân
- yeah1 becomes yeah1
yeah1 has a cool notation: it looks like yeah!. But with the mistake above, efforts to create a brand are wasted.
Why did Yahoo! 360 make it? Because the number stands alone: 360.yahoo.com
Another issue is with hi5, but since the service is not originally from Vietnam, they’re not to blame.

Hi Tai,
There’s a typo:
yeah1 becomes yéah when users using VNI method
You pointed out very interesting issues on domain and also brand selection for some VNmese online services.
This dilemma continues with:
vnexpress.net, dantri.com.vn, tuoitre.com.vn,… and also taitran.com when users using Telex method
Again, very interesting post

@javacola: Thanks for your compliment.
I also thought about TELEX, but avoiding issue with TELEX would be much harder than with VNI… we might risk losing many meaningful domain names…
We’ll see if a solution is feasible…

Great post ^^

But almost Vietnameses used Telex typing, so my domain thugian360 is OK

I doubt this statement. TELEX inputting method is a nightmare especially when you have to work with both Vietnamese and English in one doc.
