A Healthy Living source

Ken, a friend of mine at Illinois State University, has started his project on Healthy Living.

Being his close friend for 9 years, I know he has a burning enthusiasm for researching, practicing and advising effectiveness in life.

Living in the heart of the prosperous China Town of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for 18 years then moving to the US, Ken has acquired both Oriental (mostly ancient Chinese and a bit of Korean) and Western philosophy of healthy living.

This blog of mine has always been about business and everything about healthy working development & conditions. Until recently, I started being more serious on work-personal life balance and that was one reason why I strongly support Ken’s project.

More coming on his site: Healthy Living

Inside-out Effectiveness from an English lesson

Category: How General stuffs work No Comments »

    The Word form English lesson

English is not my native language, so I learn it my whole life.

From the lesson of word form, I learned that

    • Verb is the most effective form
    • Noun and noun phrase come next
    • Adjective is less direct

    For example:

    • “The Beatles influenced many subsequent rock bands.” is more effective than
    • “The Beatles was an influence on many subsequent rock bands.” which in turn is more effective than
    • “The Beatles was influential on many subsequent rock bands.”

In a grammar test, the using of word form should be considered for effectiveness of the options given. Noun form, though commonly used, must give way to its verb counterpart in these test of standard.

    How Verb is stronger

Maybe more than once you have heard a complaint about life. “My life has not been good lately…” and such. The fact is, these people may forget that they Live their Lives: they do their jobs, perform their roles, fulfill their missions. Their Lives are shaped by these actions. Reactive people accept the conditions placed upon them. Proactive ones, on the other hand, seize opportunities from challenges, and set things right.

The root is Live (verb). Life (the noun) is the product of the Action.

So if one takes the responsibility to Do and focuses more on Verb side, s/he is getting stronger toward achieving effectiveness.

    Mapping to individuals

Levels of individuals: character, personality, interpersonal

From the core inside, it’s what we Do (Verb) that shape our character. We commit, we response, we empathize, we love.

Character is reflected on the surface as personality by Nouns. We have commitment, responsibility, empathy, love.

Outermost is the interpersonal level, where we are usually described by others as committed, responsible, empathetic, lovable.

In conclusion, the root of all is what we take the responsibility to act upon.

    RMIT Coat of Arms

Category: How General stuffs work No Comments »

The Coat of Arms was officially designed in 1986 to coincide with the 1987 Centenary Year of RMIT and to be an ongoing symbol for the University. Approved by the College of Arms, the Coat of Arms is held to be a mark of great dignity and embodies a rich symbolic language.

The crest of wattle which defined this Coat of Arms as uniquely Australian and the sprigs of Commonwealth, the floral emblem of Victoria, proclaim a nationalistic spirit.

The shield itself symbolizes the immutable strength of education.

The ancient lamp on the shield, which has featured prominently in former Badges of the University, continues as a clear symbol of enlightenment. St. Edward’s Crown, used in accordance with the permission granted by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, is boldly highlighted on the chevron.

In chief on the shield are two four-pointed stars representing enlightenment and skill.

‘Perita Manus Mens Exculta’, the RMIT motto, meaning ‘a skilled hand and a cultivated mind’, continues to be most relevant to the variety of programs offered by the University.

Supporters of the Coat of Arms are the Lion and the Kangaroo. The rampant Lion is derived from Supporters to the Coat of Arms of Lord Melbourne, Prime Minister of Great Britain, after whom Melbourne was named in 1837. The Kangaroo Supporter is an emblem of Australia. The Coat of Arms thus uses emblems to acknowledge the Royal Patronage, indicate a pride in Australia and proclaim Melbourne as the foundation city of the University.

Symbols of enlightenment are skill point to RMIT’s concern for future year and the important role of the University in serving the community.
